Eyewash Stations vs Dump Bottles at Work: Bacon's Safety Tip

Sep 8, 2017 10:13:00 AM / by Quad City Safety

You want to hear something that might make you shed a tear?

OSHA just increased their penalities if you fail to comply with ANSI Z358.1-2014 by 80%.

Think about that the next time you try to get by without the right eye safety systems and first aid. Think a portable dump bottle is enough? Think again.

Sure, a dump bottle is great for a little harmless dust, smoke or seasonal allergies. But, if you’re working with acids, solvents, particulates, chemicals or anything dangerous, toxic, or corrosive, you need an eyewash station on site.

Here’s a another tip: Make sure your station is inspected by a competent person every week to be sure its clean and working the way it should.

Bacon's Safety Tips Eyewash Station vs Dump Bottle Hint: Dump bottles don't count as true eyewash!

Oh, your work site is only temporary? You have no running water? That’s ok. The miracle of science has created portable eyewash stations that you can use wherever you need it!

It’s just that simple.

If you get something dangerous in your eye, you need the right first aid immediately. You don’t have time to hope that splashing a little water in your eyes will help. You need to be able to reach an eyewash station within 10 seconds of a known hazard.

Not sure what dangers lurk on the jobsite? Well, then it's time you did a little hazard assessment.

Make sure you pull out all your safety data sheets while you’re at it. That way everyone knows what hazards they are working with and how to protect themselves from injury.
