Choosing Work Boots Shouldn’t Be Eenie Meenie Miney Mo But, there are so many choices! Don’t worry. We’re here to help make your next boot purchase less complicated with these simple explanations. Electrical Resistant AKA Electrical Hazard (EH) protection reduces the chances of you getting hurt if you come in contact with live electrical circuits. Unlike static hazards, electrical hazard shoes can have a steel safety toe. Electrostatic Dissipating (ESD) Reduce the chance that you get zapped by an electrostatic charge. Necessary for protection against spark ignition of hazards like flammable materials and gases. Various levels of protection exist, so be sure to match hazard risk to protective factors. Heat-Resistant Sole Work in high heat applications? Then, you’ll want safety shoes that have a heat-resistant sole. They provide protection up to roughly 572° F for short term applications and 266°- 392° F for long term. Waterproof Ever work a 12 hour day in the rain? Have you ever had to trudge through 10 inches of water to repair a pipe? Then, you understand why you need protection against rainy, mucky conditions to keep feet dry and warm. Foot protection may be treated to provide waterproof protection or you can use waterproof booties. Protective Insulation Ice, snow and sleet can make for a long, miserable day. Synthetic insulation keeps your feet warm and protected against the bitter elements. Steel Toe These offer protection against impact and compression hazards. Steel toed footwear is the traditional choice, but composite toe and alloy toe options exist. Composite Toe Instead of a steel toe, worker can use a safety toe commonly made from plastic, Kevlar aramid fiber and carbon fiber blends. Metatarsal Guard Protective toe shoes protect your toes. But, what about those tiny bones on the top of your foot? Worn over top of your shoe or built-in to the shoe itself, these cool gadgets protect you from impact and crush hazards. Shank Piece of metal between the insole and the sole that lays along the arch of the foot. Provides arch support and decreases the load felt on the wearer’s feet and calves. Puncture-Resistant Protects the skin from materials that could possibly pierce or stab through the shoe. Puncture-resistance can come from a protective toe, metatarsal guard or the sole of the shoe. Heel The heel or heel cup of a boot holds and supports the heel, stabilizes ankle and assists in minimizing lift when walking. Slip-Resistant A good work boot or shoe should give you good grip on work surfaces. Whether you risk slipping or tripping from an elevated floor or risk sliding on some oil — slip-resistant shoes should keep your feet planted firmly on the ground.
